About Solana

Solana (SOL) is a high-throughput Layer 1 blockchain launched in March 2020 by Anatoly Yakovenko and Raj Gokal. It pioneered Proof of History (PoH), a verifiable timestamping mechanism that lets validators agree on transaction ordering before consensus, enabling sub-second block times and theoretical throughput of tens of thousands of transactions per second.

Combined with Proof of Stake validation, PoH gives Solana its signature high-speed, low-fee profile. Validators stake SOL to participate; rewards come from network inflation (~4-5% annualised, scheduled to decline) and transaction fees. Half of each transaction fee is burned, creating modest deflationary pressure when network usage is high.

Solana's runtime, Sealevel, allows parallel transaction execution across non-overlapping account sets — a fundamental architectural difference from Ethereum's sequential EVM model. Solana supports smart contracts written in Rust, C, and C++, executed via the Solana Virtual Machine (SVM).

The Solana ecosystem includes major DeFi protocols (Jupiter, Raydium, Drift, Marinade), NFT marketplaces (Tensor, Magic Eden), prediction markets, memecoins, and consumer apps. Solana DeFi has surged in 2024-25 alongside the memecoin trading boom, often surpassing Ethereum mainnet in 24h DEX volume. The network has experienced periodic congestion outages but has improved reliability significantly since 2023.

Frequently asked questions about Solana

What is Solana (SOL)?

Solana (SOL) is a cryptocurrency listed on global exchanges and tracked across major data providers. It currently ranks #7 among all cryptocurrencies by total market value. Live price, market cap, trading volume, and historical performance are displayed on this page and refreshed continuously.

How does Solana work?

Solana uses a high-throughput Proof of Stake design enhanced by Proof of History (PoH), a verifiable timestamping mechanism that lets validators agree on transaction ordering before consensus. The result is sub-second block times and theoretical throughput of tens of thousands of transactions per second. Validators stake SOL to participate; rewards come from inflation (currently ~4-5% annualised) and transaction fees. Half of each transaction fee is burned. Solana runtime, Sealevel, allows parallel transaction execution across non-overlapping account sets — distinct from the EVM sequential model.

How much Solana is in circulation?

Solana has no hard supply cap. There are currently 577,789,743 SOL in circulation, and the supply continues to grow at a rate determined by the protocol's issuance schedule.

How can I buy Solana?

Solana (SOL) is traded on most major cryptocurrency exchanges, including Binance, Coinbase, Kraken, OKX, Bybit, and Bitstamp. Availability depends on your jurisdiction and the exchange's listings. After purchase, many users transfer their SOL to a self-custody wallet for long-term storage. This information is educational and does not constitute investment advice.

Is Solana a good investment?

Cryptocurrencies, including Solana, are highly volatile and carry significant risk of loss. Whether Solana is appropriate for a given portfolio depends on the investor's individual risk tolerance, time horizon, and financial situation. Always research the project's fundamentals, understand the risks, and only allocate capital you can afford to lose. This page provides market data only, not personalised investment advice. Consider consulting a licensed financial advisor before making investment decisions.

How is Solana different from Bitcoin?

Bitcoin (BTC) was the first cryptocurrency, designed primarily as a digital store of value and peer-to-peer payment network with a fixed supply of 21 million coins. Solana (SOL) focuses on different design goals, with a different technical design, supply schedule, and ecosystem. Bitcoin derives its value primarily from scarcity, security, and brand recognition, while Solana's value is tied to adoption within its specific use case and underlying network effects.
